Overview

The Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning is designed for those starting a career in educational support. This course equips learners with the skills and knowledge needed to assist teachers and contribute to the development of students. Key topics include supporting positive behaviour, communication skills, and safeguarding practices. Learners gain practical experience in supporting the learning environment, working with students of various ages, and promoting inclusive education. The qualification is ideal for individuals wishing to work as teaching assistants, classroom support staff, or in similar roles within education. 

This course is available both as a part-time option and as an apprenticeship.

Key information

Learners must attend an interview with the Childcare Team and course offers will be subject to a short literacy screening test.

Apprenticeship route only:

Apprentices must be employed for a minimum of 16 hours per week in a suitable school for compulsory school aged children.

If you do not currently hold an A-C grade GCSE qualification in English and Maths then you will be required to complete essential skills qualifications as part of their apprenticeship framework

The Level 2 Certificate in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools offers an immersive and comprehensive learning experience that is designed to equip you with advanced skills and knowledge in educational support. Our course delivery is carefully structured to ensure a dynamic and enriching journey, balancing theoretical insights with practical application.

The course is delivered by experienced lecturers through face to face delivery, one evening a week, at our Tycoch campus.

The course is assessed through a number of assignment tasks. Learners are also assessed through observation of practice by one of our experienced assessors. 

Upon completing the Level 2 Certificate, you'll find yourself equipped with skills and knowledge that opens up a wide range of progression opportunities within the field of education and beyond. These include:

  1. Teaching Assistant: With a solid foundation in educational support, you'll be well-equipped to secure a teaching assistant role.
  2. Learning Support Practitioner: With your knowledge of supporting students’ needs, pursue a role as a learning support practitioner.
  3. Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Coordinator: As you deepen your expertise, aim for positions as an Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNco).
  4. Further Education: Use your certificate as a stepping stone to FE. Consider the Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning.

No matter which path you choose, the Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools provides you with the advanced skills and knowledge needed to make a meaningful impact in education.

Students are allocated an assessor who will support you throughout your time on the course. You will have access to a range of facilities and support services at the College to aid your learning experience.

Part-time route:
You will need to complete 200 hours of voluntary placement over the course of the academic year. You will require a DBS check which will be organised by the College at an additional cost.

Apprenticeship route:
You will complete 6 weekly reviews with your assessor via your smart assessor e-portfolio. You will need to secure a school placement.
