10 weeks

Overview

This digital photography course invites you to explore the full photographic process, from shooting to editing. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to sharpen your existing skills, you'll gain hands-on experience using professional equipment and software in a creative, supportive environment.

Based at the Llwyn y Bryn campus, you’ll have access to a fully equipped photography studio, lighting kits, and an Adobe Mac suite for editing. Each term focuses on a key area of digital photography, allowing you to gradually build confidence, technical ability, and a personal creative style.

This structured and practical course is designed to help you develop essential skills in digital photography and image editing, using industry-standard tools and techniques. You’ll be encouraged to think critically about your subject matter, composition, and how to present your final images - whether in print or digital formats.

Term one

Term one introduces the fundamentals of digital photography, perfect for beginners. You’ll learn how to use a digital camera effectively, understanding core concepts such as exposure, focus, composition, and lighting.

Term two

In term two, you’ll focus on image editing using Adobe Photoshop. This term will help you understand why editing is an essential part of the creative process, teaching you how to enhance, adjust, and transform your images.

Term three

Term three brings together photography and editing skills, offering a more comprehensive approach for both beginners and those with some experience. You’ll continue to capture images while refining your editing techniques and exploring different photographic genres.

The three terms are separate qualifications and would require three enrolments for the complete year, or students can just enrol for one or more.

Course objectives:

  • Gain a solid understanding of the basic principles of photography
  • Learn the importance of editing and image enhancement
  • Develop the ability to explain and apply editing and photographic techniques effectively.

Course outcomes:

  • You will be able to explain and use the fundamental concepts of photographic techniques and editing techniques
  • You will be able to develop an understanding of the requirements needed for several genres of photography
  • You will be able to take, upload and edit photographs.

Key information

No previous experience necessary, just an interest in the subject area. Learners would benefit from attending each term to build skills in preparation for term two and term three courses, although this is not a barrier to attending each term as a standalone course.

This course is delivered in the art and design studios at our Llwyn y Bryn Campus in Uplands, Swansea.

To achieve your qualification, you'll complete a practical booklet of outcomes throughout the course, which will then be assessed.

Each term lasts for 10 weeks. You'll find it beneficial to attend consecutive terms to progressively develop your skills, but you're also welcome to join any term as a complete standalone course.

Progression from any part-time course could offer a pathway to full-time courses in art and design. For adult learners considering a creative career, the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course could provide a progression route for this.

Having a DSLR camera would be beneficial but not required.
