Laboratory and Science Technicians Level 4 - Higher Apprenticeship
Overview

This apprenticeship route is ideal for aspiring Lab Technicians, giving you the opportunity to gain invaluable hands-on experience directly within a professional lab setting. You'll develop essential skills, contribute to real-world projects, and immerse yourself in the industry from day one, all while building the portfolio needed for RSciTech status.
You will complete the following qualifications as part of the apprenticeship framework:
- Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Applied Sciences (Chemistry)
PLUS
- NVQ Level 4 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities.
Key information
Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science, Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Applied Science, a minimum of two AS Levels (to include a Science and/or Maths).
The Higher National Certificate in Applied Sciences (Chemistry) will cover the following topics:
- Fundamentals of Laboratory Techniques
- Scientific Data Handling Approaches and Techniques
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Regulation and Quality in the Applied Sciences
- Physical Chemistry
- Work Based Investigation
- Analytical Chemistry.
The NVQ in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities will cover the following topics:
- Developing and maintaining a healthy and safe work environment for scientific or technical activities
- Assuring quality processes and procedures for scientific or technical activities
- Maintain effective working relationships for technical activities.
You will also study essential skills (Level 2) in Application of Number, Communication and Digital Literacy.
Successful apprentices can progress to further qualifications or Higher Education courses. The apprenticeship is recognised, with continued professional development, to Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) status.
Laboratory technician positions applicable may be in laboratories in a range of research fields (e.g. biology, pharmaceutical, materials), or testing laboratories in hospitals, environmental monitoring, or educational establishments.
Completing this course can lead to employment as:
- A Laboratory Technician e.g. school, university, hospital, industrial laboratory
- Lab Supervisor/Manager
- Analytical Chemist
- Research Technician
- Clinical Lab Technician
- Environmental Monitoring Technician.
