Overview

This qualification is aimed at potential learners who wish to work within the Installation and Maintenance of Domestic Natural Gas Heating Systems.

Applicants may have little to no prior knowledge of Gas Fired Heating systems, however, as the course explores each area listed below in detail, it is suggested that some prior reading is undertaken.

  • Legislation
  • Installation of Pipework
  • Tightness Testing
  • Meter and Meter Installations
  • Gas Rates and Burner Pressures
  • Combustion
  • Flue’s and Ventilation
  • Unsafe Situations Procedures
  • Gas Controls and Devices

Upon completion of this course, you will meet the entry requirements of our Initial ACS.

Key information

There are no formal qualifications required to enrol, however there will be an interview process to cover all the work required throughout the course and to assess the candidate’s suitability. 

Candidates will need to demonstrate that you are able to access appropriate and sufficient on the job experience. The engineer who is providing the experience must be a member of the Gas Safe Register.

The qualification is delivered through a combination of face-to-face sessions in classes and 1:1 support.

Learners are required to build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and competence in practice.

The duration of the classroom-based teaching will vary between learner’s dependent on experience within the industry. (This will be discussed during the interview).

Learners will be required to complete a number of theory-based assessments in the classroom along with practical based activities.

These range from:

  • Gas installation pipework
  • Combustion
  • Testing and purging pipework
  • Installation, service and repair gas boilers
  • Testing and commissioning procedures
  • Ventilation requirements of appliances
  • Gas controls
  • Unsafe situations

Successful completion of the course will allow access on to the ACS Initial Gas Assessment at the Energy Centre.

Upon successful completion of the ACS assessment, learners will have the opportunity to register with Gas Safe, allowing them to work within the gas industry.

Learners can then decide to apply for gas engineer roles within local companies or register as self-employed and set up their own business.

Learners can also progress and train in OFTEC oil and work in the oil industry.

Additionally, there will be opportunities to upskill in the renewable energy sector and complete training in Heat Pumps and Solar Thermal.

The Gas Managed Learning Programme costs £3,000, however there is funding available to reduce this cost to £1,500 (subject to eligibility. Please contact us for further information.

After completion of the Gas Managed Learning Programme there will be the additional cost of Initial ACS Gas Assessment to pay.

Standard fee of £750 (possible funding may be available, please check at time of application).

Minimum 18 weeks to 12 months on-site portfolio work in addition to 20-25 days of classroom based training.
