Silversmithing Specialist Workshop
Overview
Three sessions of ten weeks of workshops are designed to encourage development of advanced silversmithing techniques and to allow you to specialise in your chosen area. The courses are suitable for those with some experience in silversmithing.
Select from a range of stone setting techniques, forming techniques, enamelling, casting, hinges, joints and clasps etc., riveting, forming, or work with a theme.
Students may specialise in a different technique during each 10 weeks or continue their specialism for the entire year if they choose. These workshops are flexible in content, to enable you to refine selected advanced jewellery making techniques. You will be expected to do some research and design work appropriate to your specialism.
Each 10-week session can be independent of the others - skills will be taught for each specialism as needed. Students will be expected to work independently and produce work of a high standard and quality finish.
Key information
Previous experience necessary e.g. beginner and intermediate silversmithing courses.
Learners will make a piece or pieces of jewellery to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding and their competence in practice.
There is progression throughout the year, however each Silversmithing course can be independent of the others – required skills will be taught on each course as needed.
The course is delivered through face-to-face sessions in a well-equipped silversmithing studio - all tools are provided.
A range of assessment methods can be used:
- Direct observation of practice
- Oral questioning / professional discussion
- Evaluation of their final piece
- Health and safety will be observed throughout.
Staying with Gower College Swansea, you could keep returning to the Specialist Workshop to learn different skills or continue to practice chosen skills.
Learners can also progress into self-employment (or employment), or to other courses in the Jewellery field.
Studio fee of £10.
Students will need to buy their own silver which is available from www.cooksongold.com .The cost of materials will depend on the individual designs and choice of stones. There will be at least one project to complete on each course.
