Sewing Skills and Dressmaking
Overview
Ever dreamt of creating your own stylish garments or perfecting the fit of your clothes? Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to refine your skills, this course will guide you through the exciting world of dressmaking, from mastering a sewing machine to designing and making garments tailored to you.
With expert guidance in a supportive and creative studio environment, you’ll develop confidence in sewing, garment construction and pattern cutting, across three progressive terms:
Term one
Perfect for those new to sewing, this term introduces you to using a domestic sewing machine and overlocker. You’ll gain essential troubleshooting skills and create a simple sewn item, such as a stylish tote bag, to practice basic sewing techniques.
Term two
Building on the basics, you’ll work with a commercial sewing pattern of your choice to create a garment. You’ll explore fabric selection, seaming, hemming, and garment finishing techniques, developing the skills to confidently bring a sewing pattern to life.
Some prior experience with a sewing machine is required. Completing term one is beneficial.
Term three
In this final stage, you’ll step into the world of pattern cutting, learning how to draft your own sewing patterns based on your unique measurements. You’ll leave with a set of personal templates, empowering you to design and create custom garments with a perfect fit.
Experience with a sewing machine and basic garment construction knowledge is required. Completing term one and two is beneficial.

All essential sewing and pattern cutting equipment is provided, but owning a sewing machine is highly recommended to practice your skills outside of lessons.
